Turbidity Currents and Their Deposits

چکیده
The article surveys the current state of our understanding of turbidity currents, with an emphasis on their fluid mechanics. It highlights the significant role these currents play within the global sediment cycle, and their importance in environmental processes and in the formation of hydrocarbon reservoirs. Events and mechanisms governing the initiation of turbidity currents are reviewed, along with experimental observations and findings from field studies regarding their internal velocity and density structure. As turbidity currents propagate over the sea floor, they can trigger the evolution of a host of topographical features through the pro-

Ten turbidite myths
During the past 50 years, the turbidite paradigm has promoted many myths related to deep-water turbidite deposition. John E. Sanders (1926–1999), a pioneering process sedimentologist, first uncovered many of these turbidite myths. This paper provides a reality check by undoing 10 of these turbidite myths. Myth No. 1: turbidity currents are non-turbulent flows with multiple sediment-support mech...
متن کاملSediment Transport by Mud Flows and Turbidity Currents in Continental Margins
This research has two main components. The first component addresses the evolution of mud flows (i.e. dense gravity currents) on submarine slopes, with the goal of developing the capabilities to predict the velocity, thickness, and run-out distance of mud flows. The second component of the research involves experiments on non-channelized turbidity currents (i.e. dilute density currents) and the...
متن کاملDevelopment Of Gullies And Bedforms In Continental Slopes By Turbidity Currents
Our long-term scientific goal is to develop sound theoretical models for submarine sediment movement that can be used to predict the initiation, spatial development, and time duration of mud flows and turbidity currents. Of great interest are the characteristics of the sedimentary deposits that these flows generate, in particular their capability to develop bed forms and gullies by means of sed...
متن کاملSubaqueous eruption-fed density currents and their deposits
Density currents fed directly from subaqueous eruptions can be divided conceptually into three groups based on modes of fragmentation and transport: (I) explosive fragmentation, with deposition from a gas-supported current; (II) explosive fragmentation, with deposition from a water-supported current; (III) fragmentation of flowing lava, with deposition from a water-supported current (Fig. 1). G...
متن کاملIn situ visualization and data analysis for turbidity currents simulation
Turbidity currents are underflows responsible for sediment deposits that generate geological formations of interest for the oil and gas industry. libMesh-sedimentation is an application built upon the libMesh library to simulate turbidity currents. In this work, we present the integration of libMesh-sedimentation with in situ visualization and in transit data analysis tools. DfAnalyzer is a sol...
